Barack Obama Smoking

March 16, 2007 8:04 am

ABC news recently had an interesting story Obama to Quit. No unfortunately Obama is not quitting the Presidential race, just quitting smoking.

“I’ve never been a heavy smoker,” Obama told the Chicago Tribune. “I’ve quit periodically over the last several years. I’ve got an ironclad demand from my wife that in the stresses of the campaign I don’t succumb. I’ve been chewing Nicorette strenuously.”

Now I am sure Nicorette is happy to hear that, but what about Camel Cigarettes? I hear they had a couple of interesting ideas for an ad campaign…

Unfortunately for Camel, Barack Obama may not be 100% behind this new “Obama smoking” campaign.

On the other hand his intentions of quitting now bring up many interesting questions. Like, is this to court the anti-smoking voters? What about those who still light one up every now and then? Should they be offended now that the Democratic golden boy no longer uses the sin sticks?

Of course being addicted to Nicorette is a whole new story, maybe they have a few campaign ideas for Obama the smoker.

Bottom line, he’s weak, everything is a lie if he can be in such denial as to let him think it’s okay to tote a cancer stick on occasion. What a horrid example this woulkd be for the youth of America!!!

Hey Chris Cottam

Shut the hell up. Smokers are people too, you Nazi. Just because someone “totes a cancer stick” doesn’t mean they’re “weak” but what “woulkd” you know about that…

The vote of your ignorance is up to two now. How in the hell can u say that a quitting smoker is a bad example to America’s youth… If you may have forgotten, smoking is still legal.. lying(WMD) isn’t!

If Obama smokes, he should not be our president. Something killing thousands, maybe millions every day needs to be taken seriously and if he is to busy smoking, everyone else will to! I’m voting for Hillary unless he pulls himself together and quits for good!

I see nobody is mentioning Clinton and his cigars. Whats the difference?

If the worst thing this man does is smoke .. then he’s a good person. Anti smokers need to examine at their own lives before they refer to “sin sticks” or any other sins. I haven’t seen Obama attacking another person with such hate and venom.. Throw your rocks and show me any perfect human without sin or weakness. Lying, adultrty, alcohol abuse, and scandal are the backbone of American politics. Whats smoking compared to this ? A bad example? oh yeah sure . Its not good but such a minor thing when we look at the entire political picture.

if obama has in fact quit smoking, i would vote for him. if he lights up again, i don’t know. as has been said before, a smoking president would set a terrible example for young americans. if he is committed to staying clean, then he should be okay.

I heard that Huckabee is a crank-head. The Portland Observer reported that he has smoked crystal meth with actor Dan Haggerty.

HE SMOKES? WHO SMOKES ANY MORE ANYWAY?

I was telling my 10 year old daughter that I am trying to choose a President based on their strength of charecter, and their judgement. My daughter then pointed out that Obama smokes. How was i suppose to explain that.

It speaks to weakness on a regular basis, poor judgement, giving in to addiciton.

I’m not saying it’s reason enough to not vote for him, but we are trying to hang our hat on reasons to vote for him, and this just made me think, “um, no”

Are you people serious? Barack Obama is not Muslim (although I question the motives of anyone who thinks it would be the end of the world if he were - nothing is less American than baseless hatred and discrimination based on race, religion, or creed). And as for whether or not he smokes, has anyone here ever seen him do so on TV or in a photograph? I would suspect that no visual evidence exists, given the poorly-Photoshopped image heading this blog post. If he does smoke on occasion, his reluctance to do it while in the media’s eye means, to me at least, that he IS interested in “setting a good example for the youth of today” (who, must I remind you, tend to take their cues from their friends and entertainment celebrities rather than politicians).

The ignorance, thinly-veiled racism, and arrogant masquerading behind a username displayed on this site are to be expected, I guess. It seems more important to most “conservative”-minded people to make baseless and sensationalist attacks on candidates’ character, history, or habits than to rationally discuss the issues. Maybe you know that if you had to form sound, reasonable arguments against expanding health care or extending rights to LGBT people, your case would crumble very quickly. Better to appeal to voters’ guts than to their heads or even their hearts. But if the ignorance of opinion on this site is to be expected, could we not at least have decent spelling and grammar in the blog posts and in the comments? Doesn’t help your case much to seem as though you were so hot-headed in your response that you couldn’t even add punctuation.

You cannot expect a person who is addicted to nicotine to be impartial in dealing with the tobacco lobbyists…much LESS to lead this nation to a national health policy that will ensure coverage for all Americans. Quit (cigarettes) or QUIT (the race) Senator Obama!

He smokes a bit. Calm the hell down. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to fix America’s health care problems. His inability to quit smoking at the drop of a hat is not reflective of weak character. Nicotine is a very complex and addictive drug as it replaces a neurotransmitter in the brain, dopamine i believe. Quitting is quite taxing on ones mind, and he strikes me being in a rather stressful point in his life as it is. Nicotine use isn’t clean cut in the sense that you’re either a full blown addict to it or your not. I used moist snuff for about four years, and would go on little breaks every now and then…point is, i functioned fine while i was on it; i wasn’t a ravenous addict. Smoking around three cigarettes a day is really not a big deal. Bad habit really, not a full blown addiction.

I know plenty of Muslim people and they are wonderful people. Not sure what that has to do with Obama, as he isn’t even Muslim, but I just thought I’d say…

Who the hell cares that his middle name is Hussein? It’s a traditional name for people from where his father came (Kenya). He’s not Iraqi, he’s not Afghanistani (and people who assume THOSE two countries are the same are just ludicrous — get a globe… and a newspaper).

He’s not a friend of Osama, he’s not related to Saddam Hussein. He’s mixed-race because his dad and mom were of different ancestries (like every other American — I’m Scottish and German, what are you?).

Bill Clinton smoked cigars and was one of our best presidents. George W. Bush refused to admit doing coke, which reflects his lack of honesty in his term thus far. Obama has come clean about his history as a youth and about his sometimes-smoking habit. He’s human. As my friend said recently to another racist conservative Obama-hater, build a bridge and get over it.

The Obama’s are RACIST! Barack should drop out of the Presidential race and resign his Senate seat. I would EXPECT the same from a white Senator. Neither our government nor our country need his “philosophy”. Shame on him for even coming near a so-called pastor spitting hate from his mouth like a snake spitting venom. SHAME!

Olandug wrote a comment on March 22, 2008

We should judge a person by their actions and not their words. The fact that Obama choose Mr. Wright as his spiritual teacher for 20 years and included Mr. Wright in his election staff speaks well for Mr. Obama’s thinking and actions. Words are easy to manipulate and it is unlikely that Obama’s recent speech was written by Mr. Obama anyway. Mr. Obama has a powerful and power hungry staff including his wife that will do anything to get him elected to power. But clearly this man Mr. Obama is not to be trusted with the future of our great country. And regardless that he is ‘fashionably black’ and that many of you have some desire to prove to yourself or to others that you are not prejudice and that you like ‘black people’ with an attitude of ‘See, I like black people, I voted for a black person.’ And whether you are black or white, such an attitude of voting for a person because of their race is the definition of prejudice.

It’s his own fault that it’s an issue because he preaches. He’s been set up as perfect - almost a savior. His followers swoon over him and it’s all about ideals without any details. Clinton smoked cigars but the Clintons are much more down to earth. With Obama, being this savior type, and then finding out he smokes makes him appear disingenuous. I really think he needs to be more down to earth and give some specifics. I like what he said about the silly gas tax relief and about other things, but until he stops preaching, and until his followers and the media start treating him like a candidate and not a religion, then yes, this will be an issue.

Anyway, the media was all over Hillary for oh, the way she laughs. Well, this is far more serious.

I guess Col. Charles Beckwith (the founder of Delta Force) was weak because he smoked(?). Good grief man.

It’s not that he smokes, but what quality tobacco is in his hand. Priorities man.

Ignorant people make important decisions based on trivial matters. Such as not going to the store just because FOX news says they found dirt in a local Walmart’s garden dept. Morons.
